Winter 1917 (Builds) – I vote for a 4-way draw

Strategic thoughts: we won’t get more eliminations

  • Austria didn’t fall for my last trick. I can’t get a breakthrough. And now I’ve even turned around for another bite at the solo win after feigning a draw stance. The other players are extremely unlikely to be fooled into attacking each other, and each of them has too many points to be easily finished off. I could drag out the game another year maybe, but I think that would be a waste of time.[1]I did not note this at the time I kept this journal, but DANG… Austria is an absolutely brutal player. • I think to whittle the game down to a 3-way draw from a 4-way draw, I would have to cede a bunch of supply centers to make it clear that I can’t solo win. And, even if I did that, there’s no guarantee that the game would actually progress towards a 3-way draw (the players might not take the bait because I had attempted a solo win more than once). So given that it could take a huge amount of time and there’s not a good chance of success, I think I’d rather call it a day here.

Orders: well, this is surreal

  • One of the remaining defending powers hasn’t voted draw.
    • Is this a mistake? Did someone pull back a draw vote to make sure that France got eliminated before we ended the game and has forgotten to put it back up?
    • Or maybe someone is holding out for a 3-way draw?
    • Or maybe someone wants to throw me the game for some reason?
  • I do have another build I can make since I withheld making a 17th unit. I suppose I don’t see a reason to build it now either, since my position is impregnable and so is theirs.
  • I guess I’ll leave my draw vote up and see if the other players all put their orders in.

1 I did not note this at the time I kept this journal, but DANG… Austria is an absolutely brutal player. Austria seized Rome to prevent Italy from getting any build, ensuring that Austria would be the second-biggest power and could not be somehow cut out of the draw if I try to reduce the draw size down to 3. Very bold. If I were in Austria‘s position, I would have been afraid to take Italy‘s center at Rome, for fear that Italy would not understand, become angry, and try to throw the game to Germany. I think the main reason Austria was so confident that Italy wouldn’t throw the game in response is that the caliber of players in this game is very high. Accordingly, Austria knew that Italy wouldn’t perceive the attack on Rome as a reason to throw the game to Germany.
