One interesting aspect of playing new variants is how it affects negotiation. On the classic board, experienced players will already have thoughts on the risks and benefits of working together with specific other countries. But when you play on a new variant, not only should you try to sell that you as a player are reliable to work with, but you should also try to sell that your countries are natural allies. Ideally you should convince the other player that the variant is unbalanced and that the two of you have to work together due to its constraints.
