Why Your Bored Brother is Raising Money2 min read

Your Bored Brother cross-posted this piece on Patreon and Ko-Fi.

Over the last several years, I have produced a mountain of online content related to board games. Between my posts on brotherbored.com and my private tutoring of numerous players, the effort I have put into teaching others about Diplomacy (and other games) is as much effort as a second job.

I haven’t done this work expecting financial rewards. I have a day job, and it is orders of magnitude more lucrative than teaching games. Nevertheless, I am ambitious. To achieve my dreams, I am making an explicit effort to get more support from my fans. Let me tell you about my ambition.

My contributions to Diplomacy (and the gaming community at large) cost me a lot of time, and even cost me some money. There’s a limit to how much I can invest in a venture of questionable financial return. But I would love to spend some money to produce better content. For example, if I had a bigger budget for BrotherBored’s projects, I could hire help in producing video content (e.g., I could contract out for some animations).

That is not the full extent of my ambition. If I could find a way to cobble together different sources of revenue related to board games—such as advertisements on my blog, YouTube videos, Patreon, Ko-Fi tips, and selling games of my own design—I would gladly retire from my day job (or more likely, go part-time) to focus my life on what makes me happiest: sharing my love of games with others who would bask in that love.

I’m a long ways away from realizing that ambition. But we can all dream, can’t we?

I may never be able to pay the rent with tips, but even a few dollars make me hoot and holler with glee. Show me how you share that love of games.
