This map shows how Austria almost always needs Munich to win.

Austria

The Austrian Gunboat Solo Win Plan

Austria has the narrowest path to victory of all 7 powers. Almost always, Austria wins by taking over the entire South (Italy, Tunis, Austria, the Balkans neutrals, Turkey, Warsaw, Moscow and Sevastopol) plus Munich.

Almost zero variation on the plan

  • If Austria wins, it will almost always be because Austria took all the centers colored in Green, plus one of the other centers (Tunis, Berlin, or St. Petersburg).

Austria should keep fleets to a minimum

  • A small number of fleets can be useful for invading Turkey or eventually gaining control of Tunis (in the very late game). Otherwise, fleets are almost useless for Austria. Austria should invade Russia and Italy with armies, and Turkey can be conquered in the late game with only a small number of fleets.

Extreme levels of overlap with Turkey’s plan

  • Note the extreme levels of overlap with the Turkish solo win game plan. This overlap makes Austria and Turkey each others’ natural enemies by far.

Getting an ally is very difficult

  • All the other Southern powers (Italy, Turkey, Russia) need to control all of Austria’s home centers to achieve a solo win. Unfortunately, this puts Austria in a terrible position in Gunboat and Austria is by far the most likely power to be eliminated first.
